Death cafés
What is a death café?
Deathcafe.com is a worldwide movement started in London in 2010 by Jon Underwood and Sue Barsky Reid, based on the ideas of Swiss Sociologist Bernard Crettaz.
The objective of the deathcafe.com movement is “to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives”.
Of course, cake, tea or coffee always helps the conversation flow!
Death cafés
Palliative Care WA recognises the importance of death cafes and their role in helping people increase their awareness of death and dying. We hold our death cafes, with the theme of ‘Muffins, Mugs & Memories’, during key weeks throughout the year.
Please visit our Events section to see when and where you can attend one of our death cafes. Deathcafe.com is a great place to start to see what’s happening not only in your neck of the woods but also across Australia and the world.
We look forward to seeing you at one of our death cafes and sharing muffins, mugs and memories.
There are other death cafes being held in Perth and in some country areas. Some that we are aware of include:
- Dying to Chat Coffee mornings are held at the Bodhi Tree Café in Mt Hawthorn on the third Friday of each month from 10.00am to 11.30 am.
- Death Cafe Midland at the Mildand Library, from 2.30pm to 4.00pm, on the first Saturday of the month.
- Death Cafe – Fremantle is held on the first Sunday of the month at Moore and Moore Cafe from 1.00pm to 3.00pm. To learn more visit HERE.
- Death Cafe NOR monthly meetup hosted by Lisa Galatis (End of Life Doula). Visit Facebook link HERE for details.
If you know of others, please let us know by emailing info@palliativecarewa.asn.au
Some rules for our death café
A death café is a discussion group, not a grief support group or counselling session.
To make this a safe space so that everyone benefits, please be mindful of the following:
- be respectful of other peoples’ points of view and experiences without judgement
- remember discussions are confidential
- allow others time and space to make their comments
- pay attention to others sharing what may be painful or personal stories
- have your mobiles on silent
- please don’t lead other people to any conclusion or course of action*.
