You only die once – sharing stories of death and dying and dignity

Palliative Care WA is proud to co-present the ‘You only die once’ event on Saturday 29 October 2022 at the State Library from 10am.

The day will involve a panel discussion, advance care planning workshop, and a Death Cafe, and is jointly organised by Palliative Care WA, the Centre for Stories, and the State Library of WA. Funding support has been provided by the Department of Health and the State Library, with sponsorship from Richard Lockwood.

Guest speakers will include Palliative Care WA CEO Lana Glogowski, Perron Institute Research Chair in Palliative Care UWA Professor Samar Aoun, The Metis Centre Director and Founder Dr Marilyn Metta, and Tender Funerals Perth Director Jane House. Topics explored will include ‘What does a good death look like? How important is choice and control to having a dignified end-of-life? Why is death still such a taboo topic for some communities, and how might community be the very answer to some of our most difficult questions concerning death?’

The panel discussion with be facilitated by journalist and palliative care advocate Rita Alfred-Saggar.

A two-hour interactive workshop encouraging a ‘think, talk, write and share’ approach to planning for the last stages of life commences at noon and will be facilitated by Palliative Care WA’s Sabena Lund. This will be followed by a Death Cafe, facilitated by Margaret Sealey, at the nearby Alex Hotel Cafe where participants can chat freely with others about the death and grief in a relaxed atmosphere while having coffee and cake.

The day promises to be enlightening and fascinating and will also celebrate the State Library of Western Australia and Centre for Stories’ latest oral history collection: ‘Death and Dying.
